Location: Oxford, United Kingdom

Price: £4.575 million (US$5.91 million)

This six-bedroom house in Oxford was the longtime home of author J.R.R. Tolkien, and where he wrote his breakthrough novel, "The Hobbit," and parts of the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy.

"There is a school of thought that part of the inspiration for the books was this particular property," listing agent Chris Dixey of Breckon & Breckon said.

"It’s quite a large house on a generous plot," he said. "The next owner still has the opportunity to put their stamp on the property."

Tolkien lived there with his family from 1930 until 1947.

"It’s one of the most expensive areas in Oxford," Mr. Dixey added. "It’s a nice six-bedroom family house in a family area with good schools."

The house was built in 1924 and awarded protective Grade II-listed status in 2004 because Tolkien had lived there, according to Breckon & Breckon.

The house features a generously sized reception hall with stairs to the second floor, where all six bedrooms are located.

A 27-foot-long drawing room has triple-aspect windows and double doors that open to the garden. There are two additional reception rooms, alongside a kitchen/breakfast room.

Amenities

The house has original wood floors, generous ceiling heights, large rooms and custom-steel windows. The yard is large and flat.

The house has a few original fireplaces on the ground floor, Mr. Dixey said. "The kitchen still has a bell system to communicate with the rest of the house."

"The size of that plot is significant," he added. "It’s a really good-sized plot for that area."

Neighborhood Notes

"The city of Oxford itself, where the universities are, is probably just a 10-to-15-minute walk away," Mr. Dixey said. "You’re close to the city center, close to the university parks."

It’s in an area where the "best independent schools are," he said. "All of them are within walking distance."
